about us

Since its inception in 1997, Strictly Funk has challenged the boundaries of conventional hip hop, funk, and jazz dance & expression. Based in Philadelphia, the company of 20 + diverse dancers have been redefining dance theatre for the past 10 years.

Beginning in 1999, Funk's vision of dance culture led to its first effort to break out of the theatre and produce The House that Funk Built at Space Night Club. Highly touted in Philadelphia Weekly's "Off the Hook" as well as City Paper's "Mix Picks," the show drew hundreds with its fusion of hip-hop & jazz choreo.

The fall show iDance/Dysfunktion continued to shake up dance expression. Featured in Philadelphia Weekly & 34th Street Magazine, the show drew capacity crowds for 3 nights as it explored identity loss and technological breakdown through jazz, hip hop, bboying, locking, and tweaking.

Funk shows run on a continuous soundtrack, breaking only for intermission, while also incorporating video and elaborate lighting. A Funk show is not just a performance, but an experience.
